Week 8 in the Junior School

Kindergarten C

Last Thursday evening, the Kindergarten children had the opportunity to bring their Dad¹s and other special loved ones to school for a night of fun, food, laughter and games in celebration of Father's Day. All of the children had a wonderful time sharing a sausage sizzle, singing a song, showing a video and completing lots of activities in the playground and classrooms. Happy Father's Day!

To celebrate our special Dads, Brothers and Grandparents, the Pre-Primary students hosted a Games Night on Thursday, 5 September, where all Father figures were treated like VIP’s. They all competed in an Egg and Spoon relay, Tunnel ball and Rock, Tree, Bridge relay. The two most popular games were the ‘The World’s Greatest Shave’ and “The Best Dressed” with a toilet paper roll. Both were entertaining because the VIP’s were at the mercy of their children.

Everyone received a sausage sizzle and the students were treated with a rock cake for dessert from our lovely Caden. The VIP’s left with huge grins across their faces and a personalised gift from their child. So much fun was had and I would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to all who came.

The Pre-Primary students welcomed back Mr McKern, Lily and Oscar! On Thursday, 10 September Mr McKern, Lily the puppy and Oscar the teddy, returned to Holy Cross for a visit. The children were delighted and asked many questions. Mr McKern showed the children all of the treasures that he collected on his walk to Uluru; rocks from different camping grounds, Ochre (a rock that can be ground into powder then used a paint), a Story stick and Waddy stick (heavy club constructed of carved timber). The children showcased their work to Mr McKern including photos, letters and questions about his journey.

Mr McKern will be back at work next week. Make sure you stop him to ask him about his walk to Uluru!

Pre-Kindergarten

The last few weeks saw the children very busy creating gifts for their Dads for Father's Day and exploring the things they love about their Dads. We hope all the Dads enjoyed receiving their gifts and got spoilt with love last Sunday.

We have continued our learning of two-dimensional shapes and the children created some wonderful shapes using pipe cleaners. The children have also been introduced to the measurement language of "short, long and tall". The next few weeks will see us exploring big and small as well as heavy and light. You can help your child by finding things around the home that match this measurement language, as well as using this language when you describe objects.
Australian animals will be the focus for our learning about God's creation for the rest of this term. So far, the children have role-played camping out in the Australian bush and created spiky echidnas. You may wish to discuss some Australian animals with your child and encourage their oral language skills by talking about their attributes, such as: size, colour, shape, features, etc. I look forward to a wonderful rest of the term.
