Ozanam Feast Day 2015

On Wednesday 22nd April, Ozanam House celebrated the feast day of our patron, Frederic Ozanam.

A beautiful Church service was held at 8.30am in St Helena of the Holy Cross Church and was attended by everyone in Ozanam House. The liturgy was led by our House Captain, Daniella Jacobs, and was a wonderful start to a day filled with celebrations.

A BBQ sausage sizzle, which was prepared and set up by our Ozanam Year 12 students, started our lunch time games and get together.

Thank you to everyone who donated items for Passages Resource Centre in Northbridge, which is the charity Ozanam House is supporting in 2015. The donations of everyday items such as shampoo, deodorant, tooth paste etc will be presented to the charity on Friday by our House Captain Daniella Jacobs and College Captain Connor Francois.

Thanks to everyone who assisted on the day.

Holy Cross College Remembers – ANZAC Day 2015

Holy Cross College remembered the courage and sacrifice of all Australian soldiers and support personnel at an ANZAC Day commemorative service held on the College Boulevard on Friday 24 April 2015.

This was the first time the College gathered students with their chairs on the Boulevard in front of the administration entrance around the flagpoles. Students are to be commended for their deference and efficiency. The service began with a series of drum rolls by Mr McRae. The students’ attention and reverence was amazing.

Ethan Gibbins, Austen Staples and Tristan Hall were resplendent in their Air Force Cadet uniforms as they took their places as honour guards raising and lowering the Australian and Western Australian flags.

Ms Karen Taylor is also to be commended for her ingenious creativity in making the paper poppy wreaths from the poppies made by students in HTG and class.

Mr Frank Mallard, a Vietnam veteran and parent in the College, gave a short address and presented the College with two books on behalf of the Ellenbrook RSL Association.

Ms Connor, gave an address highlighting some of the history of the ANZAC legend and commemoration and its link to the city of Albany. Ms Connor attended the 100th Anniversary Dawn Service on ANZAC Day in Albany, where she was Principal of St Joseph’s College for many years.

We are grateful to Mr Harry Muller for organising the service and thank the staff and students who, so reverently, contributed to this memorable occasion.

Ellenbrook Combined Schools’ Anzac Day Service

The Ellenbrook Combined Schools’ Anzac Day Service has grown in strength over the years with the hundredth anniversary commemoration being the biggest yet.

Schools from the Ellenbrook region came together at the Woodlake Amphitheatre and ANZAC Memorial on Wednesday 22 April 2015. The lake and surrounding gardens were breathtakingly beautiful in the Autumn sunshine with numerous wildlife adding to the solemn atmosphere.

Year 9 students walked the short distance from the College to the lake in the fine morning sunrise.

Chardonnay Mitchell gave a heart-warming address on what ANZAC Day means to her.  Students from other schools also addressed the gathering. Jonathan Tartaglia and Megan Jones placed a wreath on the cenotaph on behalf of the Holy Cross College community.

The Honourable Graeme Edwards, MP, Member for Cowan, gave an address relating the valour and spirit of the ANZAC’s in standing up against World War I adversaries to the courage and resilience required to stand up against schoolyard and cyber bullies.

The combined choirs of St Helena’s Catholic Primary School and Ellenbrook Independent Primary School were outstanding.

Congratulations to Ms Vicki Harley, Deputy Principal, Ellenbrook Independent Primary School, and her team of helpers in organising such moving and impressive event.

Cross Country Carnival

On Thursday April 23rd Holy Cross hosted the 2015 Inter House Cross Country Carnival, which ran from Kindergarten all the way to Year 12. The day started with our Junior School Carnival in the morning, where each year group completed our new course around the College oval. There was great House Spirit shown by all Junior School competitors and our participants put in a great effort.

There was a great competitive atmosphere on the oval after lunch with the Middle and Senior School students competing in either a Competitive 3km run or 2km Fun Run.  It was wonderful to see a large number of parents who came to spectate and a special thank you to those who offered their assistance on the day.

Well done to McCormack House who took out the Junior and Middle/Senior School Carnivals and congratulations to those students who won their age group race, as this is a great feat.

A busy start to Autumn Term in the Junior School

Kindergarten H
It was so delightful to see the all children with their smiling faces as they returned back to school after the Easter break. We came back to the classroom to discover that our home corner had been transformed into a camping site. Many of the children already claimed to be experts in this area as they had been camping during their holiday. It wasn’t long before the children were sitting in the deck chairs and cooking marshmallows on the campfire. Some of the children used fishing nets to catch some tasty fish for dinner, while others were happy to relax in the tents, as the meals were prepared.

This term our big ideas question will be “How can I care for the environment?” We hope to investigate both natural and physical environments in the world around us in order to answer this question.

We look forward to another fun and exciting term in Kindergarten.

Kindergarten H Teacher

Year One
Two weeks off and we are back into learning! This week the students have been looking at the new application Explain Everything. They created recounts of their holidays and included a sentence, a picture and voice recording. Some of the work will be presented at our assembly on Tuesday.

During Religious Education our new unit of work is titled ‘Lots of Learning’. Students have wondered at the ability to learn and illustrated a time they enjoyed learning something new. The unit of work will continue to explore ways other people help us learn and investigate ways Jesus used his special gifts to learn.

Week One’s reading has taken us all around Australia! We have been reading Alison Lester’s book, "Are We There Yet?" Speech marks, nouns and punctuation have been a focus. We revised some nouns around the room, looked at what happens when we see speech marks and tallied the types of punctuation in the story.

Cross Country was so much fun! The students all tried their best and enjoyed the cheering in their Houses.

Year Three
We have definitely had a busy start to the Autumn Term in Year 3! We have enjoyed participating in the Easter Resurrection Liturgy and Opening of the Shade Sails, Ozanam Feast Day and Cross Country. We are also preparing for the NAPLAN Testing in Week 4!

In the classroom we are learning about the significance of ANZAC Day. We have been listening to songs that tell the stories of our ANZAC heroes and looking at world maps to see which countries were involved. We have drawn pictures which show our understanding of what happened 100 years ago. We are looking forward to the College ANZAC Service on Friday Morning where we can show our respect to those who served in the war.
