Year One

After our EXCITING LIFE week adventures we are back to our regular learning in Year One.
This week in Mathematics we have been saying ‘I moustache you a question’. The children have been collecting data, tallying and graphing their results. They have asked about their favourite colours and fruits. We will continue to look at pictograph and number graphs to present our findings. We now know when we tally that we need to put a strike through our four numbers to make five.

We have been ‘Reading the Landscape’ in writing and reading this week too. We are looking at Geographical environments around Australia and trying to describe their features with exciting and descriptive language. We have tried to add adjectives and adverbs to improve our sentences.

Chester has visited EVERYONE in our class for a weekend adventure. He is so worn out that Miss Behiels will now look after him over the weekend; however, we will continue to integrate our star of the week through our PATHS lessons.

This week in PATHS we read a story about Mandy, she is a young girl who has feeling just like us. She sometimes uses polite manners and sometimes is rude. We shared times when we may have been rude and times we have been polite. Children shared how they would feel if someone was polite or rude to them. We discussed the importance of using our polite manners more than rude manners.

The Year One’s were so lucky to have Kelsey from Bunnings Ellenbrook visit our class! She helped build a holder for all our Father’s tools for Father’s Day. We hope all our Fathers had an enjoyable day on Sunday!

The last few weeks has seen us exploring the topic of pets. We talked about how God created animals and how pets are animals that people own and need to look after. The children were very keen to share all that they know about pets from their prior experiences. We set up a veterinary surgery as one of our learning environments and the children have had a great time looking after all of the sick and hurt animals.

Over the next few weeks we will continue to explore living things as we move our focus to Australian animals. We will also continue to build on our counting skills to ten, knowledge of two-dimensional shapes and begin some number recognition to ten. We have also begun to use the iPads in the classroom more frequently and the children have been busy exploring the application 'Puppet Pals'. This application helps develop their oral language and story telling skills.

It has been wonderful to see so many parents coming in on parent roster. If I could ask that you please sign in at the front office before coming in to help, this will ensure that we know how many extra people are on school premises throughout the day.
