Senior School Ball 2014

Our very first College Ball was held on Friday 21st February at Caversham House in the Swan Valley. The night started off with photos down stairs in the Hidden Garden by the waterfall followed by fruity mocktails. The chairs were trimmed with mauve chiffon bows that complemented the exquisite table centrepiece.

The evening was opened by our Head Girls, Giordarna and Teagan, followed by a beautiful prayer written by Sofia. Caversham House supplied us with a fantastic buffet dinner and dessert. There was various dance competitions throughout the night and we were all entertained by the DJ all night long with a selection of music from the 50's through to today's hits.

The evening was punctuated by a variety of actives including an air guitar competition, a dance off with the teachers and prizes award to many of students throughout the evening. Students are asked to purchase their photos from Midland Photography and keep your eye out in the West Australian for photos in the coming weeks.

Thank you to the Friends of Holy Cross for helping support our very first College Ball and we would also like to thank the following Ellenbook businesses for their generous donations towards making the evening a great success. Bunnings, Masters, Dome Café, Woolworths, Dymocks, Subway, Civic Video, Pulse Fitness, 24/7 Fitness, Muffin Break, Coffee Club, The Brook Bar and Bistro and Zarraffa’s Coffee.

Friends of Holy Cross

At the February meeting of the Friends of Holy Cross a new Commission of authority to operate and provide service to the community of Holy Cross College was agreed.

The Commission establishes the purpose and guidelines for the operation of the Friends of Holy Cross. The structure recognises the different gifts and interests parents bring to the College and aims to foster positive inter-relationships and spirit within the College community.

There is less focus on meetings and more on building teams around the four LIFE pillars: Learning, Inter-relationships, Faith and Enrichment. The teams, or Councils, have a co-ordinator who works to gather their team to assist in running activities that fall under their particular pillar. For example, one of the common activities of a parent body is to raise funds to help provide items that cannot usually be accommodated within the College budget. This would come under the Enrichment pillar. Some people have a special talent and interest in raising funds while other people do not. For these other people there are still ample opportunities to be involved and contribute to your child’s education through the other pillars of Learning, Inter-relationships and Faith. The Learning Council might run special forums or seminars for parents on topics of common interest; the Inter-relationships Council may hold social gatherings to build community spirit; and the Faith Council might assist with the LifeLink Sleep-out. Teams would only need to meet to organise particular activities and help out on the day of the event, not attend regular meetings.

To ensure the ongoing operation of the Friends of Holy Cross the Commission includes an Executive Council comprised of the President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary. The Executive Council and LIFE Council Co-ordinators may meet more often to map out the events for the year and provide support to the LIFE Councils.

The College is entering a wonderful new phase in its operation and the growth of the Friends of Holy Cross presents many exciting new opportunities for parents the be actively involved in their child’s education.

Kiss and Drive Success on the First Day!

Thank you to all parents and students for your cooperation and assistance with the first day of our Kiss and Drive. It worked like a charm.

I’m sure it will only get better as we build a culture of courtesy and safety for our students.

Remember, students should only get in or alight from the two vehicles at the front of the queue. If your child is not ready to be collected, drive off and re-join the queue.

Thank you too, to Mr Taylor and Mr Wilson for your assistance.

What a wonderful community we have.

Week 3 in the Junior School

KINDERGARTEN
This week we had an integrated session with the Pre-Primary children for our PATHs lesson. Miss Pritchard helped us to make masks to show what our faces look like when we are feeling happy or sad. We enjoyed playing with the Pre-Primaries and look forward to working with them again next Thursday. Also this week we had the big kids from the senior school visit our class to organise some fun learning activities and games (which will hopefully be a regular occurrence).

Thank you to all the parents for your attendance and participation at our parent information evening.

Mrs Tucker

YEAR ONE
The fabulous Year Ones have been busy reading ‘There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly’ this week! The children loved sequencing the story as a class and looking at all the rhyming words. We then brainstormed all the different animals the lady swallowed and thought of other possible things she could have eaten. During our phonics lessons we have been looking at camera words (sight words). We have learned that we can’t phonemically sound out all of these words so we need to take a picture of the words and store it in our heads.

**Just a little reminder that we are collecting lids of all sizes - jar lids, jam lids, milk bottle lids, juice lids, etc. as well as other recycled items.**

New Kiss and Drive procedures to operate from Monday 24 February 2014

21 February 2014

The safety of our students is paramount. Therefore, as the College grows in enrolments we need to adapt and modify procedures to ensure their ongoing safety. With the addition of 80 Junior School students and around 120 secondary students there is a need to adopt new procedures for dropping students off in the morning and collecting them in the afternoon.

Parents are advised that the new Kiss and Drive procedures will commence on Monday 24 February 2014.

Students being dropped off or picked up in the front car park can only do so from the Kiss and Drive area. Students can no longer wait to be collected from the area in front of the Office.

See the notes and diagram below for a full explanation of the procedures.

New Student Drop-off and Pick-up Procedures
Drive through Kiss and Drive

Healthy young people often experience growing pains as they journey to maturity. Holy Cross College is no different as it journeys to a full enrolment configuration. One of the growing pains is the evolving nature of procedures in regard to student drop-off and pick-up during the day. In 2014, there is approximately 200 additional students, of which around 80 are in the Junior School where parents are required to park and collect their students from the classroom. Furthermore, the number of staff has almost doubled.

Consequently there is considerable demand for parking spaces and pressure at peak times of student movement at the beginning and end of the school day. We must expect to change our habits to accommodate the growth in the College and ensure safety for our students.

Therefore, a new procedure for student drop-off and pick-up will be introduced from the beginning of next week. Key aspects of this procedure include:

  • Student drop-off and pick-up will only be permitted in the drive through area in the front car park (see the diagram below). This is not a parking zone.
  • Students must wait in this area until their parents enter the drop-off/pick-up zone before alighting from the car or getting into the car.
  • Where students are not present to be picked up parents will be required to immediately drive off and re-join the queue. This will ensure an orderly flow of traffic.
  • There is considerable street-side parking a short walk from the school. Parents are encouraged to utilise these spaces.
  • Where parents have found a parking space or are parked in the surrounding streets students will be permitted to walk to meet their parents.
  • Come 10-15 minutes later, once the traffic has eased.
  • Do not double park or block driveways.
  • Do not park and alight from your vehicle in the Kiss and Drive area.
  •  Do not overtake in the Kiss and Drive area, but wait for the traffic to move forward.

We take our responsibility for the safety of your children very seriously. All we ask is that you too, take your responsibility for creating a caring, respectful and safe environment very seriously as well.
