Week Four Autumn Term

All the things you can think (Dr Seuss)

LOOK OUT! The Pre Primary’s have been writing! Ava initiated writing at home and brought it in to school to show everyone. It has now been added to our Writing Wall. Eve did an excellent job of writing about the apples on top of her head, and Ruby blew Miss Behiels away with her writing about the chicks that visited our class. The Pre Primary’s are becoming Star Writers.

As a part of our Dr Seuss book focus we read "Ten Apples Up on Top".  We then had a discussion about growing some plants that we could eat. Mr McKern surprised us with a terracotta plant pot, basil and snow peas. We are so excited to now have a garden! As a class we are going to watch our plants grow and record all the changes that we see. We may even get to eat some once they grow. Everyone is welcome to come in to have a look.

God Bless,

Miss Emma Pritchard

Year 2
What a fortnight!  The last two weeks we have been really busy preparing for and presenting our assembly.  Our buddies helped us to learn our song and then we had to teach Mrs Ryan. She made a video of our buddies and us singing it! We all did really well and Mrs Ryan was very proud of us.

We have also designed and built models of the types of equipment we would like to have in our playground. We had to incorporate a push an pull movement into our model and use our imaginations. Some of the designs include a roller coaster, train, water slides and amazing swings! Let's hope our playground is as amazing as our models!

College Drama Production - Lockie Leonard: Human Torpedo

Tickets for the 2014 College Drama Production of LOCKIE LEONARD: HUMAN TORPEDO are on sale NOW!

Shows will run nightly at 6.30pm from Thursday 26 to Saturday 28 June with the Saturday evening option of Dinner & the Show.

If you are unfamiliar with the story, here is a brief overview:

"Surf rat Lockie Leonard (Jack Hammon) is in love. The human torpedo is barely settled into his new school and already he’s got a girl on his mind. And not just any girl: it has to be Vicki Streeton (Rebecca Hughes), the smartest, prettiest, richest girl in the class. What chance have you got when your Dad’s a cop (Max Hughes), your Mum’s a frighteningly understanding parent (Laura Evans), your brother (Jamie Evans) wets the bed and the teachers (Katelyn Verran, Nathan Sweet and Gabriella van der Linde) take an instant dislike to you? Then you fall in love at twelve and three quarter years old. It can only mean trouble, worry, mega-embarrassment and some wild, wild times."

Tickets can be purchased by heading to www.trybooking.com/82399 or by scanning the QR code on the posters around the College. We hope to see as many people at the shows as possible. Please purchase your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

How can technology be used in an emergency?

Several year 7 students went on a visit to Ellenbrook Fire Station last week, as part of their Big Ideas question: 'What will save the world, honeybees or computer chips?' These students are investigation how technology can be used to save lives. The students were given a tour of the fire station, and were in the middle of a talk on how technology can be used to alert lots of people to a danger at once, when the alarm bells started to ring for real!

The students lined up to witness the firefighters go out to deal with a chemical spill, before asking any final questions to the firefighter who was left to man the station!

Ice Ice Maybe? The Year 8's take on a frozen challenge in Big Ideas!

In Week 3, the Year 8 group began their new Big Ideas topic 'Ice Ice Maybe: What does Antarctica's Future Hold?
Throughout the launch, the students had the opportunity to explore a variety of 'museum exhibits' that provided them with background information on Antarctica.

The students ran an interactive simulation about how the world would change if Antarctica's ice melted, and made predictions about how life for the human race would be affected.

Students were placed in teams to take part in their very own 'Race to the Pole,' a challenge that will run over weeks 4-7 and focus on developing teamwork, communication and critical thinking skills.

Each team was given the name of a famous person who has contributed to the study of Antarctica, and as their final launch day activity, the teams researched their team name and used their findings to present some information about their important person.

Over the remainder of the term, the Year 8's will be investigating why Antarctica is so important. They will use a variety of different disciplines, including Geography and Science, to study Antarctica's value to the modern world. At the end of Term 2, the students will use what they have learned to produce a creative piece to inform the world about Antarctica's value and the dangers facing Antarctica in the 21st Century. Over the course of this project the Year 8's will be encouraged to think creatively and critically, and to consider how they can influence the future of their planet.

Year 7's are buzzing with excitement!

Half of year 7 are currently investigating why Honeybees are so important. At the start of the inquiry process, they dissected flowers and looked at dead bees under the microscope to get to know these small but mighty creatures even better. Some year 7's even managed to get a photo of the bees up close and personal, through the microscope!

Week 3 Autumn Term

KINDY

The Kindy students have become experts at looking for rainbows in the sky after the rain has come through. This has prompted some further investigations in the classroom. We have been singing a rainbow song and learning about all the beautiful colours that God put into a rainbow. This got us thinking, "why isn't black in a rainbow?" There were some very creative responses! It was then discovered that rainbow starts with "r", which is the same letter at the start of Ruby and Riyanne's names. Next week we are going to explore other things that start with the letter "r".

YEAR ONE
The Year One’s have been busy bees lately! We are just loving hearing all about Chester’s crazy adventures. He has visited the zoo, helped with gardening and even enjoyed Fionn’s birthday cupcakes! He is feeling very spoilt and is looking forward to spending the weekend with Brody.

Within History we have been looking at what classrooms in the past looked like and how students used to write with quills. It’s been interesting to compare how different our classroom is from the past. We are lucky enough to have bright colours, sit at tables in groups and be able to use iPads and different forms of technology. It has been REALLY interesting to compare the past with the present.

Year One is looking forward to seeing the Year Two’s assembly this Monday (19 May) afternoon in the ELC Da Vinci space.

Year 7 Big Ideas Launch

On Wednesday 30th April, year 7 students were introduced to their big question for big ideas this term; ‘What will save the world: honey bees, or computer chips?’ Both are small and mighty, but which is the most important?

To launch this topic and get students fully immersed in both sides of the question, all year 7 students spent a day at Scitech in Perth.

While at Scitech, students could observe a real beehive, and watch how bees go about their daily business. They had a chance to speak with an apiarist to start to find out more about bees.

We also enjoyed a science show, which Miss O’Neill participated in, and had lots of time to explore all the science and technology exhibits, before visiting the planetarium.
A great day was had by all!

A Chicken Treat!

The Pre Primary students have been immersed in reading Dr Seuss stories. This week we read Horton Hatches an Egg. Horton the elephant sits over Mazie the bird's egg and keeps it warm through the winter storms before it hatches at the end of the story. The story inspired our inquiry into what else hatches out of an Egg. We examined the lifecycle of a chicken before we had a CHICKEN TREAT. The Kindergarten class joined us in watching, observing and asking questions about the chickens. Some of the questions were:

Eve: How did you get them?
We got them as eggs, like you see in a shop, and warmed them in an incubator for 21 days.
Lilly: What do they eat?
They eat normal food like you; Lettuce, carrots, yoghurt, bread.

Susan: I notice they are not yellow.
Not all chicks are yellow. Some are grey, black or a combination of both.

Jaxon: How does the beak move?
It opens and shuts like yours.

Karlee: How much bigger do they get?
They will grow to double this size.

I'd like to give a big thank you to the Beazley family for providing this experience for the Kindergarten and Pre Primary students.

Technology is a buzz in Year Two

The first two weeks of this term have flown by. We are beginning our designs of the type of playground equipment we would like in our playground. In the next few weeks we will be building working models of our designs.
We are now investigating different apps on the iPads and have made movie trailers about the book Koala Lou. This was great fun and while we were doing this we were having to think more about what the story was about.
In maths we are working on subtraction and place value through games and  investigations. Who would have thought maths could be fun!

Pre Kindergarten has joined the ELC

The newest and youngest students in the College have well and truly made their presence known at school. The Pre-Kindergarten students have spent the last two weeks familiarising themselves with their new surroundings and their new friends. The room is a buzz with singing, dancing princesses, creating, exploring and investigating. This week we sang and danced to “Twinkle, twinkle little star” and then made a sparkling star to take home with the cards we made for Mother’s Day.
