Junior School Inter-House Dance-Off

And the winners are.... OZANAM!

Congratulations to the Junior School Ozanam dance group for winning the Dance-Off today.

Frayne did an amazing job to come in a close second, followed by an equally fabulous tie between McCormack and Salvado for third.

Well done to all and thank you to the HCC student community for supporting all of the students who participated.

Catholic School Youth Summit

On Tuesday six Year 10 and 11 students attended the Catholic School Youth Summit at the University of Notre Dame in Fremantle. This was a great opportunity for these students to reflect on the theme #getoffthecouch to become proactive Catholic leaders. The theme was centred around Pope Francis' call out to young people at last year's World Youth Day to be people of action. The highlight of the day for the students was hearing the story of Fablice of flybz, an African refugee and now rapper where he challenge the students to never give up in their endeavours.

Year 9 Big Ideas: Around the world in 80 paces

In Week 8, Year 9 students began the first phase of presenting their work completed during Autumn term by leading the Year 7 student cohort on a journey around the world in 80 paces. Throughout the term, the Year 9 students have been exploring the big question “How can food sustain the world” in which they have worked in collaborative teams to investigate one country from around the world, to explore the culture, economy, political system and geography of that country and the food security issues facing the country both now and into the future. The students then presented their country as part of an interactive and multi-modal display for Year 7 students, who acted as United Nations Ambassadors, selecting which countries had the most pressing and urgent food security issues and required funding. The Year 7s were ‘paid’ United Nations money for the information they collected and were then able to distribute the money amongst the Year 9 teams as they saw fit.

In the last phase of the project, the Year 9s will refer to the food security issues facing countries around the world that they studied this term and a range of sustainable food security solutions to suggest suitable strategies to secure food for their country’s population into the future.

2017 Middle and Senior Inter-School Athletics Carnival

Friday 23rd June saw the 2017 Inter-School Athletics Carnival take place in relatively clear, fresh conditions at the College. The atmosphere was vibrant and competitive, with Mr McRae's Course Announcing very well received by competitors, officials and spectators alike.

With an excellent amount of competitors nominating for the 800m event, the day got off to a flying start and continued on from there. All events, Track and Field, were extremely well represented with students showing a willingness to not only compete in events they were comfortable in, but trying everything available to them.

As the day progressed McCormack were able to get out to an early lead but were challenged by all other Houses at different stages of the day. As the schedule moved to the prestigous Relay Events, the final leaderboard was still open for any House to make their move. After a fantastic display from all Houses in the Relay's (and an interesting display in the Staff and Students relay) the final leaderboard read;

McCormack 1949
Frayne          1894
Salvado        1655
Ozanam        1484

Congratulations to McCormack on a fantastic effort, highlighted by an extremely large percentage of participation across all Year Group.

YEAR 9 HASS AND BIG IDEAS PERTH AND FREMANTLE EXCURSION

On Thursday, 22 June, Year 9 students participated in an excursion to Fremantle and Perth City. Students had an early start making their way into Perth City to begin their day and gain some insight and practice into the procedures for the upcoming LIFE Week during which most of the year group will spend the week in Perth City.

Students and staff took the train to Fremantle where they made a brief visit to the Welcome Walls at the Fremantle Maritime Museum before walking across to the Fremantle Prison where students participated in a Convict Tour and collected evidence to investigate the question: What were the experiences of convicts in the Fremantle Prison?

After visiting Fremantle Prison, students had lunch at St John’s Square in Fremantle before taking the train to St Mary’s Cathedral to tour the Catholic Cathedral of Perth and gain some insights into how their own Catholic community at Holy Cross College is connected to the history of the Cathedral.

The day provided students with some rich knowledge they can apply both in their study of the Industrial Revolution in History as well as their city project in Big Ideas next term.

An Unspeakable Triumph of Supreme Brilliance Proves A Triumph!

The 2017 Senior Production of 'An Unspeakable Triumph of Supreme Brilliance' wrapped up with a triumphant final performance on Saturday evening for a full house. The show was hailed a huge success and very very funny by College Senior Leadership staff and audience members alike.

A huge congratulations must go to the 2017 Student Cast and Crew for their amazing hard work and dedication: John Paul Botha, James Evans, Laila Davies, Chloe Ryan, Brianna Armstrong, Abbey'Lee Quantock, Calvin Thiel, Zoe Paluszak, Chardonnay Mitchell, Breannah Rigoli, Jasmin Horsten, Alex Smilovitis, Austen Staples, Jeighten Finch, Tristan Hall, Maria Bravo-Echevarria, Michelle Karuga, Gabriella Rose Van Der Linde, Aran Burke, Anthony Menegola, Aimee Sorensen, Lexi Pether, Isobella McPherson and Chloe Andrews.

A big thanks to the core production team of Mr Chris McRae, Mrs Jackie Cuff, Mr Guy Jackson, Miss Laura Goodwin and Mr Ben Chapman for their tireless work in putting this production together ready for performance. Special thanks also to our support team of Mrs Colleen Azzopardi, Miss Edel Maher, Mr Roger Newton, Mrs Jacqui Sanders, Mrs Carolyn Jess for their work in various areas of the production process and the Senior Leadership team for their continued support of the College Performing Arts program.

Many audience members were very impressed by the students' accent work and this is in no small part due to the work of WAAPA's Head of Voice in Acting, Julia Moody. We thank her for her expertise over a series of three accent workshops. This gave the students a new and exciting challenge and the results were remarkable!

Thanks must also go to our sponsors and those who donated various bits and pieces to assist with the production! Thanks to Garry Soetano and Crust Gourmet Pizza Bar Ellenbrook. The Cheesecake Shop, Jan Oliver of Masquerade Theatre and Costume and Troy White for their generous donations.

To Susan Sorensen and the Friends of Holy Cross for coordinating the interval and to the numerous College staff who assisted in Ushering and Front of House!

Lastly, special thanks to the playwright Don Zolidis who has kept in touch with our cast and crew throughout the process with helpful tips and words of wisdom. This has been fantastic being able to source ideas from Don which has assisted our students in bringing this show to life.

An Unspeakable Triumph of Supreme Brilliance was an absolute joy for all involved and was a fantastic way to break in our new facilities. We look forward to presenting our first Year 7-12 production in this space next year and many more wonderful performances to come!

Opening Night an Unspeakable Triumph!

The 2017 Senior College Production of 'An Unspeakable Triumph of Supreme Brilliance' opened to the public yesterday with two performances. The opening matinee was presented for staff and students from Swan Valley Anglican Community School along with Aegis Aged Care Facilities in Ellenbrook before an evening show for a public audience.

The production has so far been received with overwhelming positivity with Vic Principal Mr Collins labelling the show as 'brilliant'. Swan Valley Drama Teacher Meredith Corr could not speak highly enough about the cast, saying that "all cast members created quirky characters brilliantly". She also said that her students left buzzing, wanting to perform the show themselves.

The cast and crew will perform two more public shows tonight and tomorrow night for sold out audiences!

We thank all audience members who have supported the production so far and can't wait for the rest of the performance run.
