A Chicken Treat!

The Pre Primary students have been immersed in reading Dr Seuss stories. This week we read Horton Hatches an Egg. Horton the elephant sits over Mazie the bird's egg and keeps it warm through the winter storms before it hatches at the end of the story. The story inspired our inquiry into what else hatches out of an Egg. We examined the lifecycle of a chicken before we had a CHICKEN TREAT. The Kindergarten class joined us in watching, observing and asking questions about the chickens. Some of the questions were:

Eve: How did you get them?
We got them as eggs, like you see in a shop, and warmed them in an incubator for 21 days.
Lilly: What do they eat?
They eat normal food like you; Lettuce, carrots, yoghurt, bread.

Susan: I notice they are not yellow.
Not all chicks are yellow. Some are grey, black or a combination of both.

Jaxon: How does the beak move?
It opens and shuts like yours.

Karlee: How much bigger do they get?
They will grow to double this size.

I'd like to give a big thank you to the Beazley family for providing this experience for the Kindergarten and Pre Primary students.
