‘Our Town’ at the State Theatre

A group of Year 11 and 12 Drama students got the opportunity to visit the State Theatre Centre on Friday night for a unique performance of their Semester One set text, Thornton Wilder’s classic ‘Our Town’. A balmy night and the unique staging location of the outdoor State Theatre Courtyard made for a memorable experience for the students. The ‘metatheatrical’ production was one in which all elements of the production were visible and set and props almost non existent. The performance was enhanced by audience members wearing individual pairs of headphones which provided the soundscape for the town and allowed actors and the beautiful community choir to be heard in crystal clear fashion.

The cast included just three professional actors. The remainder were made up of Perth community members: tradies, ministers, undertakers and Uber eats drivers.

Students regarded the performance as a truly beautiful and special experience and were thrilled at the chance to take their learning beyond the classroom at such an iconic venue for Perth Theatre.
