Ministry Report

A positive that some ministers of other Christian denominations see in the way that the Catholic church organises it’s liturgical celebrations is in our Liturgical Calendar and the related spreading of readings from the Bible across a two and three year cycle. As we move through the year and proclaim the Gospel at the end of each week we tell the ‘story’ of Jesus and his impact on the christian world. Last Sunday we celebrated the birthday of the church, Pentecost, the day that the Apostles received the strength of the Holy Spirit to start Jesus’ mission on earth. The Holy Spirit continues to guide us in our lives.

We now enter in Ordinary Time which takes up most of the Sundays of the year and is interspersed with a number of Feasts and special events.

                  Year of commemorations

In 2016, the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart are giving thanks for the 150 years since the foundation of the Congregation of the Sisters by Mary MacKillop in 1866. She took on the name of Sr Mary of the Cross and it is by this name that she is remembered as a saint. One of the Sisters of St Joseph that Holy Cross College has grown very close to, Sr Irene McCormack, was martyred in Huasa Huasi, Peru 25 years ago this Saturday, 21 May. Holy Cross College staff and students will be travelling to South Perth to commemorate this event with members of her family and the Sisters this Saturday morning.

Giving Life

The Year 10 students were given information and forms to help them organise two days of Christian Service next term. Students in the rest of the College are well into completing hours of service for their yearly obligations. It has been very gratifying to see the range of opportunities that our students are finding towards service of the in need.

Reconciliation Week

Last week, three of our Year 10 LIFE leaders attended workshops organised by Caritas Australia. The girls were working on how to make Reconciliation Week a week where everyone in the school is better informed about our nation’s history. As part of our reconciliation journey, there are truths to tell, stories to celebrate, and relationships to grow. More on this in the weeks to come.
