Junior School Update

Year 3

The Year Three’s have been so excited to be working in the new Fitzroy building. They love the facilities with the amphitheatre area being their favourite part. We spent the first week of the term doing lots of class building activities, as we all got to know each other and make our four new classmates feel welcome at Holy Cross College.

We also read a story called Flat Stanley, where the main character Stanley, gets flattened by a falling bulletin board, making it easy for him to travel to different places as he can be mailed via the postal service. He is a very adventurous character and he loves discovering new places. We have used this character as a springboard into our Geography topic on Australia. Students have coloured in their own Flat Stanley character and have mailed them off to friends and relatives around Australia. We are looking forward to seeing the Adventure’s Stanley goes on but in the meantime, we have been doing lots of mapping activities about the different states and territories in Australia.

This term, the Year Threes are working with students in Years Four to Six for Big Ideas. Over the past two weeks, we have been focussing on the skill of communication to both send and receive messages. Students have participated in their House groups to complete various activities to develop these important skills. One of the activities involved sitting back-to-back with a partner, where one person had a picture and had to provide clear instructions to their partner to draw.

The students have started the year off very positively and we are looking forward to continuing to learn more about our beautiful country as the term goes on and as Flat Stanley tours the country.
