College Ball - 3 February 2017

A mass of parents and friends gathered on the riverside gardens at Caversham House on a calm and overcast February evening to capture digital memories of the assembled Ball guests, who were juggling for prime front row positions on the limestone steps.

Ladies were resplendent in their finery, with gowns that would rival the catwalks of Paris and Milan and the red carpets of Hollywood.  There was a polychromatic array of full-length gowns reaching the floor, some with extended sweep or chapel trains, made of luxurious fabrics, delicately and exotically trimmed with modest off the shoulder decollete necklines. The gentlemen looked debonair in their tuxedos. One student making his father proud by wearing his matrimonial kilt showing off the distinctive tartan of the ancestral clan.

A five-metre long waterfall cascaded over the roof top of the Corinthian columns creating a fine plume of water vapour along the pathway behind. The engorged and fast flowing Swan River was peculiar for this time of year as it consumed large sections of lawn, preventing access to the jetty and the valentine’s swing. The subdued light of the setting sun behind the white veil of clouds, together with the sounds of birds and trickling water, added a Feng Shui energy to a perfect night.

Ball guests made their way up the medieval wall of the hortus conclusus like common below, while parents and friends made their way home. Guests were presented to the College Principal, Ms Connor, and other luminaries as they entered the ballroom to receive their mocktail and take their seat. College Captains, Rebecca Hughes and Caitlyn McKenzie welcomed guests to the evening and invited Sally Reyes, Faith Captain, to say Grace before function centre staff called guests forward to the sumptuous buffet. Adding to the opulent menu was an enormous selection and artistically crafted desserts and an extensive lolly buffet.

Throughout the night guests danced and sang to the various contemporary tunes, many of which were unfamiliar to the more mature generation present. The countryside surrounds and courtyard garden of the manor-house like function centre provided a tranquil retreat from the thumping energy of the dance floor. Time past quickly, which is always a sign of having a good time. The enchanted evening is now a phantasmagorias of memories that will be different for everyone present, but ones that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Thank you to everyone who assisted in making the evening such an enjoyable time, especially members of the Ball Committee and, most all, Ms Kelly Bond.
