LIFE in Pre-Primary - What a Week!

The Pre-Primary students were ecstatic when the day arrived for their excursion to the Caversham Wildlife Park. The excursion was full of exploration, adventure, learning and fun. There was the opportunity to hand-feed the kangaroos, meet a wombat, and come up close to Koalas as well as touch a large snake.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the interactive farm show where they watched sheep dogs mustering the sheep, sheep shearing, cracking a stock whip and swinging a billy. Select children also had the opportunity to bottle feed a lamb and milk the cow. A true blue Aussie experience!

As they explored the rest of the Caversham Wildlife Park, the Pre-Primary students represented Holy Cross College in the best possible way by being respectful and polite to all others around them. Their behaviour was fantastic as was their enthusiasm.

On Tuesday, the students had the opportunity to learn and explore Aboriginal Culture through various hands on activities. In order to foster their natural curiosity the children were read dreamtime stories, explored symbol writing in coloured sand and experimented with dot painting of Australian printed animals. We also had an engaging display of authentic Aboriginal items lent to us by a family from our class. It was wonderful to watch the children’s reactions to the stories, have them participate and have fun while they learnt about Aboriginal Culture and the meaning and reasons for the Aboriginal art symbols that are part of the culture's heritage. The children really enjoyed the art and craft activities and it was a very special way to encourage Cultural Awareness as a natural part of our everyday lives.

Wednesday, the children embarked on a walk through the local neighbourhood to Coolamon Oval where they were treated to football game stations and other fun, interactive games. In their groups, they were encouraged to search for and collect various nature items. All of the children gathered together for a picnic lunch with the parent helpers for the day. The day involved a lot of laughter and chatter and the children thoroughly enjoyed all the physical activity out in the open.

Thursday was a highly enriching multicultural day spent with the Year 1 and 2 students. The children moved through various stations learning about different cultures (dance, art and craft, cooking, sport etc.). The day was a great success due to the exceptional support and participation from parents. All the Junior School students came together and engaged in a respectful and enthusiastic manner. The multicultural activities helped foster the development of relationships whilst supporting, promoting and embracing cultural difference. The children were given the opportunity to better understand and respond to cultural diversity and effectively interact with people across cultures. This helped broaden their world view and was further enhanced by the thoroughly enjoyable selection of cultural flavours shared at a special lunch.

Friday was a day of reflection, which began with a Liturgy and walk ’n talk to the Olive Grove, our new reflection garden. After recess, the children joined the Year 4 class to participate in a fun mini olympics. There were various games including egg and spoon races, sack races, bucket filling and even a gymnastic display. This proved a very memorable and rewarding day! There was much laughter, competition and encouragement as the children came together from different age groups. A terrific team spirit was displayed throughout the day and the children were presented with a little awards ceremony following the events.
