Junior School Update

Pre-Primary

"I came from the dreamtime
From the dusty red soil plains
I am the ancient heart
The keeper of the flames
I Stood upon the rocky shore
I watched the tall ships come
For forty thousand years I've been the first Australian”
I am Australian Songwriters: Bruce Woodley / Dobe Newton

The Pre-Primary students are continuing to discover more answers to their Big Ideas question; “What makes Australia special?” The students began learning about the first Australians during LIFE Week. More recently, the students consolidated their knowledge. They studied aboriginal animal dot paintings and then were given blank paper to illustrate. They began by drawing the outline of the animals and then used the dot painting technique to add colour and detail. When the work is produced, it demonstrates a personalised sample of the student's understanding and drawing abilities. The students have also had the opportunity to carefully admire the individuality of the Year 1-12 pieces of art on display in the Art Showcase, located in the San Salvador Building. It is a must see!
Our class was fortunate to have a visit from Alba’s dad. He brought in some eggs from the farm and photos of the chickens that hatched them. The students were mesmerised. Thank you to Mr Tysoe!

Year 2

Did you know that when in the Pupa stage of the life cycle, mealworms become very still and no longer eat. The Year Two students have very excitedly discovered that our mealworms are metamorphosing into pupae now. After thinking that the mealworms had died we looked at our research and discovered that they hadn’t died but were changing! What a relief!

We are also investigating multiplication and the variety of ways to represent a multiplication problem. We are discovering repeated addition, arrays, commutative property of multiplication and groups. Our Mathematics lessons have left the classroom and we have used our bodies, chalk, matchsticks, cubes, teddies and play dough to represent the number sentences. We are also experimenting with measuring by using different materials and are discovering why we have to use uniform sized objects to be accurate when measuring length.

We would like to express our thanks to Mrs Longton for the time she has spent grouting our mosaics from LIFE Week. Her help was invaluable and gratefully appreciated.  THANK YOU.

Mrs Ryan
Year 2 Teacher
