Year 7 Students Dig Up the Past

On Monday, 19 February, Year 7 students were treated to an Archaeology Incursion to launch the History component of their 2018 HASS Course. The incursion largely took place in San Salvador and  was facilitated by ex Holy Cross College student Jarrod Van der Weide who is currently studying History and Archaeology at the University of Western Australia, along with the Year 7 HASS teaching team.

Jarrod presented an interesting Keynote address in which he outlined the work and significance of archaeologists and gave students some insights into some archaeology projects both in Western Australia and around the world. Students then competed in a Kahoot before embarking on four hands-on rotations to explore for themselves the processes and methods for digging up the past.

The rotations consisted of an archaeological dig demonstration, the opportunity to make and then undertake their own archaeological digs, a fieldwork study sketching and predicting the usefulness of a range of real artefacts from the ancient past and a short introduction to Ancient Greece.

The Archaeology incursion provided students with a sound base on which to begin their study of the ancient past in Humanities and Social Sciences.
