Junior School Update

Year 4

Winter Term has started with a bang in Year Four. We have immersed ourselves in all sorts of activities related to our Big Ideas question, ‘Can you save me?’ We have looked at videos, information reports, narratives and posters to gather information to help us answer this very open question. In fact, we have just written our own information reports on tigers! Parents are welcome to come and see them in our classroom. Everyone in our team is looking forward to LIFE week, where we will create our own news reports, with the hope that they may be featured on the ABC’s Behind the News website!

During our reading sessions, we have been focusing on two key areas: comprehension and fluency. To improve our understanding of the texts we read, we have been using inference to make our own judgements. We have also been using Venn diagrams to compare and contrast texts. It has been great fun practising our voracious reading to target reading fluency! When we read voraciously we focus on our volume, tone, expression and pace. We have definitely improved, thanks to the feedback from our peers.

In Week Three, we had our Year Four Mass. This was the first time we have gathered as a class in the Church since many students made the Sacrament of the Eucharist. It was brilliant to have so many parents present and we really enjoyed getting our groove on with Fr Bona!

Year 6

Welcome to the Year 6 blog. This term in Maths we have been learning about decimals; we have explored how to add, subtract and multiply decimals with varying amounts of numbers both before and after the decimal point. We have used this in real life situations, even going on a holiday to America!

In Physical Education, we have been learning about tee-ball and the skills needed to play this sport. We have been using a bat and a tee, as well as just throwing the ball. We have discovered that catching the ball can be really hard when the person hits the ball hard, straight at you!

In reading, we have been practising our comprehension skills and have started literature circles. We were given a choice of books to read and placed into groups accordingly. In groups we agree on a certain amount to read each week, then we have to summarise the story, select two words to find the meaning of, create two questions to discuss at our meeting and finally, draw a picture of our most memorable part. We then share this with our group every Thursday.

Thank you for reading about our learning in Year 6.
