Junior School Update

Year 2
As part of our Religious Education unit of work, ‘Joining in the Lord’s Meal’, the students in Year 2 explored the Sacred Vessels seen in Church and what they are used for. Throughout the second half of term, we have been learning about the Last Supper and how we remember this special time during the Eucharist each time we go to Church. We created our own special information sheet, so we can share what we learned with our friends and family.
In Mathematics, we have been immersed in exploring the features and properties of 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional shapes. One of our favourite tasks has been getting creative with magformers, box construction and playdough. Experimenting with magformers helps us to build a better understanding of symmetry and tessellation. We are also gaining hands-on practise with investigating the effect of flips, slides and turns on various shapes. We have also been having fun building our own shapes with playdough and pop sticks. This is a great way to get us thinking about how many faces, edges and corners different shapes have.

Mathematics
Over the past few months, we have been learning about fractions, decimals and percentages. As a class, we have discussed different topics including how decimals, percentages and fractions are related. We have been learning how to convert fractions into decimals and percentages. We have been working in groups and pairs to complete activities. We have also been practising how to add and subtract decimals. We brainstormed a variety of strategies to use which helped us understand. Then we moved on to dividing and multiplying decimals by 10, 100 and 1000 and rounding decimals to the nearest tenth.
English
In English, we have been working on our persuasive texts and explanation texts. We used descriptive words to make sure that the reader would be interested enough to keep reading. Everyone came up with an exciting idea to write about so that we would have lots of texts to display.
Big Ideas
We are working on a project called 'Dragon's Den' at the moment. In groups, we have come up with our own designs, inventions and products which we think would be useful in today's society. We need to make a presentation explaining what our creation does, how it will help the world today and why we have chosen it. Next week we will be presenting our ideas to our three judges who will decide if they want to 'invest' in our ideas or not! This project will involve using the 6 C's which are communication, creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, character and citizenship. Some of our products include apps, websites, vehicles and other creative ideas.
Religious Education
We have been learning about The Passover and key events from the Last Supper. We have been searching for parable stories in the Bible, learning different things from each one. We have also learned about moral choices and how Jesus always made the right choice. In class, we were given dilemmas and also came up with our own dilemmas in pairs. With these dilemmas, we had to discuss what we would do and what would be the right choice to make.
HASS
In Geography, we worked collaboratively on Indigenous Projects. Half the class researched Maori people of New Zealand and the other half researched Orang Asli people of Malaysia. We have also been focusing on Civics and Citizenship. In Civics and Citizenship, we have been learning about Australia's system of government and how it works. Next, we learned about the three levels of government in Australia. These three levels are Federal, State and Local. Everyone searched for what each one was responsible for. We are looking forward to learning more on this topic!
