Junior School Update

Year Five

We are already getting excited about all the learning we are going to be doing this term in Year 5.

This term to start the day we are completing morning Mathematics activities. This week we have been exploring 24 hour and 12 hour time. We watch short videos to help us understand the difference and then in groups of 2 or 3 we play a game of memory match. Did you know that 13:30 is the same as 1:30pm?

In English, we’re learning about the four roles of the reader. We learnt the four roles include the Illustrator, the Investigator, the Discussion Manager and the Code Breaker. We are learning that these roles help us better understand the text we are reading and why different vocabulary is used. So far we have been focusing on the illustrator and the code breaker roles.

In Mathematics, we're learning how to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. Now we know what numbers need to be rounded up and what numbers need to be rounded down. Miss Armenti taught us how to use a number line to help figure out whether numbers round up or down. We are also learning about estimating. Estimating helps us make an approximate prediction. We learnt that we estimate ALL the time, so much that we actually don't notice it.

This term in Science, we have started exploring the solar system. We've had class discussions about gas giants and terrestrial planets, how many earth days it takes them to go around the sun and how far the planets are from the sun. We read about the crazy temperatures some of these planets can reach at different times of the day and that all planets have different amounts of gravity.

In Religious Education, we have learned about consequences. We looked at different situations we could find ourselves in, the negative and positive reactions we could have and the consequences that could result from these reactions.

We can’t wait to let you know what else we have learnt in our next blog.

Kindergarten C

The children in Kindergarten C arrived back this week very excited to begin Winter Term with all of their friends.

After practising running races, relays and team games in House groups last term, the children had a wonderful time at the Athletics Carnival showing off their running, throwing and catching skills. It was wonderful to watch the College's youngest competitors try their hardest, cheer on their friends and work as a team. A special note of congratulations goes to Salvado for winning the Junior Carnival.
After such a busy day at the carnival, we decided to finish off our week by making chewy chocolate chip cookies with Mrs D’Andrea. As you can tell by the photos, we had so much fun mixing, measuring, pouring and making our delicious cookies.

This week we will continue preparing for our first Assembly which will be held on Tuesday, August 2. We hope to see you there!

Year Two

This term we have started to discover the magical world of fairy tales. We began with the 'Three Little Pigs' story, looking at the characters and identifying why each character behaved as they did. We also participated in A Reader's Theatre activity of the Three Little Pigs. Our main focus in reading this term is to learn the comprehension strategy of inferring. This skill is used to "figure out" what has happened in the story.

The sports carnival was very exciting on Wednesday. We all participated to the best of our ability and earned points for our House, whilst having heaps of fun. Congratulations to those in Salvado who helped their team to victory.

This Wednesday is our Liturgy. We have have been practising each day and are looking forward to sharing our liturgy with the rest of Junior School and parents. We would like to extend an invite to all parents and family members to join us at 9am on Wednesday, 27 July at the St Helena's of the Holy Cross Parish Church.
