2015 Middle School Transition

This week, we welcomed 116 Year 7’s and 12 new students in Years 8-11 to Holy Cross College. It has been a wonderful week with lots of activities designed to immerse our new students in technology and learning. Our ultimate goal was to ensure that our new students felt welcome and comfortable with this big change.

The week began with a pastoral day where our students met important people in the College such as Mrs Nolan in reception and Mr McKern and Mr Azzopardi, our groundsmen.  They also got to know their House Tutor, someone who will play a very important role in their life at Holy Cross as both a pastoral and learning mentor.  Lockers were assigned and our students participated in an amazing race around the college, finding rooms and acquainting themselves with the College layout. The day finished with house games where our four houses pitted themselves against each other in a tug of war and much more.

This year, we have issued all students in Year 7 with a digital passport. This document contains everything they need to know about how to be a good digital citizen at Holy Cross. When they meet certain criteria, outlined in the passport, they receive a stamp in their book. So far, we have been very impressed with how the sevens are using and learning from their passports.

The remainder of the week was spent getting to grips with the iPad, participating in core subject immersions and reflecting on the high amount of information they were being presented with. They were introduced to keynote, an app they will be using quite significantly this term, and began to create a short presentation to show their parents.

On Friday, we then invited in all Year 7 parents for a show and tell learning journey. This was a fantastic end to the week and I would like to thank all those parents who attended.

There will certainly be lots of learning for our new students still to do but they are well on the way to success and happiness at Holy Cross College.

This week students are busy on Retreat and at Ern Halliday participating in team building games. We look forward to welcoming them to their first experience of classes on Wednesday.

Please note: Parents will be receiving their Coneqt-p passwords and usernames in the post this week.
