Breaking News in Year Three
In Mathematics, students have been working in cooperative learning teams to identify numbers along a number line they created. They used their understanding of place value to sequence numbers and to position them in the correct order. They are now using the number line knowledge they developed to explore the 'jump' strategy for adding two and three-digit numbers.
In English, we have been exploring adjectives to describe nouns in order to make our narrative writing more interesting. Students came up with some terrific and descriptive adjectives and they also learnt that not any adjective can be ascribed to an object, they have to match.
In Geography, students have used Google Maps to research and draw the borders for the states and territories within Australia. They then labelled the capital cities and added in the oceans that surround our country and continent. Students are asking friends and relatives from around Australia to send them postcards so we can map major landmarks throughout Australia. They are really looking forward to postcards arriving at school that will be addressed to them. We will keep you updated on how many postcards we receive!

I am very proud of the students’ work ethic during our recent English and Mathematics activities.
The Pre-Primary students have been working on Counting Strategies in Mathematics such as: “Count and scoot” manipulatives to the side when counting; “Count and touch” each item; “Count and check” to make sure they have the correct value; and “Use a ten frame” to organise the collection. The students have been practising these strategies with a variety of materials and have showcased their learning at last week’s assembly.
During English activities the students have been working to their own ability level. Activities are ranging between letter and sound awareness, syllables, rhyming, consonant-vowel-consonant (C-V-C) words and sight words. The students have begun showing confidence and independence when working during these activities.

Pre-Kindergarten
It's been a busy few weeks in Pre-Kindergarten. We have been exploring the topic of Community Helpers and the children are enjoying sharing their knowledge about people in the community that help to keep them safe and healthy.
The children have participated in a range of activities to help them develop in all domains of learning. They have developed their fine motor skills by spraying pretend flames with water using spray bottles, locomotor skills by playing games such as 'What's the time Mr Police Officer?', language skills by using simple sentences to talk about a range of Community Helpers, creative skills by producing a range of art works relating to our topic, and much more! The children sure have been hard at work learning through play.
It would be wonderful to see some more parent helpers coming in to spend some time with us in class. The children absolutely love this special time shared with their parents and it is a fantastic opportunity for you to see what the children are doing in class as well as ways that you can encourage further learning at home.
Lastly, with the colder weather setting in, just a reminder that if your child is unwell and you are keeping them home, please remember to email administration in the morning via admin@holycross.wa.edu.au to advise us.

In Pre-Primary we have a very exciting dramatic play area! We have created an airport with reservations desk, tickets, world map, travel brochures and catalogs, suitcases, luggage tags, baggage x-ray machine, security checkpoint, pilot outfit and passports.
It is wonderful to see the children learning through a play enriched environment whereby they act out various roles, pretending to be someone else. 
To tie in with this rich learning environment, we have had a parent come and share his Austrian culture with the children, inclusive of location, language, famous buildings, people and various traditions. We even participated in traditional Viennese dance.
We have also begun reading the wonderful book “Letters from Felix”. The story is about a rabbit that gets lost at the airport and travels around the world. From each place he visits, Felix sends a letter home telling all about his adventures. First he sent a letter after arriving in London. We carefully studied images of London. The children then attempted to recreate Tower Bridge, Buckingham Place and a double decker bus using box construction and our class blocks! What fun!
Next Felix the rabbit visits Paris, France. We carefully studied images of the Eiffel Tower using Google maps and books. We observed the various shapes, sizes and patterns that feature on the Eiffel Tower. We attempted to recreate our own models using matchsticks. Note the attention to detail!
