Year 9 Curriculum Enrichment Week

I would like to thank Ms Karen Taylor for her organisation and implementation of Year 9 Curriculum Enrichment week. The students represented their College with pride and got a lot out of the week. Ms Taylor's report is below.

Mr Paul Murphy
Assistant Deputy Principal

Curriculum Enrichment Week this year saw the Year 9s journey into Perth each day to immerse themselves in their capital city and explore the big question: “Is Perth ready for the future?”. The students’ week followed itineraries they played a pivotal role in developing, based on their initial research and questions probing their research topics - City Life and Retail; Tourism; Culture, Arts and Communication; Transport; Sustainability and Heritage.

Commuting to and from the city each day was a learning experience for the students as they negotiated the public transport to meet teachers at the Perth Train Station every morning. Throughout the week, the students engaged in collecting data from a range of primary sources such as surveys, guest speakers, photographs, tours and observations for contribution to their Geographical Research Folios. They also made extensive use of their iPads for recording data and taking photographs to contribute to their Photo Montage.

Highlights of the week for all of the students included an Audience with the Right Honorable the Lord Mayor, Lisa Scaffidi, touring Parliament House, lunch at the Italian Club and a highly informative presentation by town planners at the Town Hall. Each research group also engaged in information gathering activities related to their topics. The Tourism group visited the Bell Tower; the City Life and Retail group got an insider’s view of the high end market of King’s Street; the Transport group toured a Captain Cook Cruises’ ferry; the Sustainability group conducted a site survey at Point Fraser; the Culture, Arts and Communications Group toured ABC Studios and the Heritage Group paid a visit to the Perth Mint.

As a staff, we were proud of the maturity students showed throughout the week and it was a delight to see the growth in students as they developed their independence, responsibility and engagement with the city. I would like to thank the teachers involved: Mr Paul Murphy (Year 9 Team Leader), Ms Julie-Anne Paterson, Miss Laura Kendrick, Mr Chris Gooch, Mr Chris McRae and Mrs Anna Amatulli for their support of Year 9 Curriculum Enrichment Week this year.
