Woolworths Earn and Learn 2017

This year we will be participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn program. Through this program we will be able to get new educational resources for our school – and all we need you to do is shop for your groceries at Woolworths.

From Wednesday 26^th July to Tuesday 19^th September, we are collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers.  You will get one Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every $10 spent. Please place your stickers into one of the Collection Boxes which are located in Tui DaVinci, Holy Cross Administration or outside Woolworths in Ellenbrook. 

At the end of the promotion, we will be able to get some great new equipment. The range is extensive and offers lots of items ideal for our students – including resources for Maths, English, Science and some fantastic fun supplies for Arts & Craft, Sport and for our library.

Online Literacy & Numeracy (OLNA) Dates

The Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment will be taking place at the College on the following dates below. Students who are in Year 10-12 are required to sit the OLNA if they have not yet passed the assessment/s. Parents would have received a letter from the College if they have a child who has not yet passed one or more of the components of the assessment earlier this year.

Students will be given their individual time to sit the assessments by the end of week 3 Winter Term.

Assessment Dates:
Writing - Tuesday 5 September
Reading - Tuesday 12 September
Numeracy - Wednesday 13 September

Angelico Exhibition

Each year Catholic Arts presents the prestigious Angelico Exhibition, an exhibition where Catholic secondary schools across Western Australia enter 6 of their very best student artworks. This year Catholic Arts is also holding its inaugural primary school Angelico exhibition. Both exhibitions will be held at the Forrest Centre, 221 St Georges Terrace Perth; dates/times are as follows:

Primary School Angelico Exhibition - 24 July to 11 August 2017, 9am-5pm weekdays

The 24^th Secondary Angelico Exhibition - 14 to 25 August, 2017, 9am-5pm weekdays

Congratulation to Alyssa Cosmas (year 3), Ashni Pindolia (year 3), Sara-Lili Kajcsa (year 4), Emillie Parsons (year 5), Isabele Sparkes (year 5) and Daniel Tassell (year 6) for having their artwork entered into this year’s primary school Angelico exhibition.

In addition, I am very excited to announce that this term we will have our very first ‘Artist in Residence’ Alexis Winch-Buist working with our year 7 Visual Arts students in the creation of 14 large scale ceramic tiles that will depict scenes from the Stations of the Cross. These tiles will be installed on our College buildings and will form part of our Easter Liturgy in years to come.  

As a final note, keep an eye out for information in the coming weeks regarding our annual Arts Showcase which will take place in Week 9 of this term.

Sacrament Update

Sacrament of First Eucharist

Candidates who received their First Eucharist last term and their families are invited to come to a Thanksgiving Mass on Sunday July 23^rd at 9:30am. During this Mass, the candidates will be celebrated together as a group and will be presented with their certificates. It is strongly encouraged that all families attend this special Mass.

Sacrament of Confirmation

Sacrament enrolment will occur for Confirmation on the weekend of July 29th and 30th. You can attend any of the following Masses to enrol your child - Saturday 6:00pm, Sunday 9:30am or 5:45pm.

Please bring along a copy of your child's Baptism, Reconciliation and First Eucharist certificates. Staff will be in the foyer of the Church to receive forms before and after Mass. All children enrolling will be presented to the parish community as part of the Mass and will recite a prayer of commitment together.

Junior School Update

Kindergarten

The Kindergarten children finished Semester 1 with a perfect pyjama party!

We had lots of fun making popcorn, folding pirate hats, creating patterns, painting penguins, putting on puppet shows and pretending to be pirates. 

Throughout the first half of Kindergarten, we have made new friends, learned so many skills and had lots of fun. We can’t wait to see what Semester 2 has in store for us!

Year 3

Welcome to the start of Winter Term.  What a busy and productive start it has been as the students and I begin our learning journey together.

This term has a mathematics focus on multiplication and division.  We have begun to investigate the different visual and numerical patterns in repeated addition as we reinforce the relationship between repeated addition and multiplication.  The students will be working towards an ability to recall the multiplication facts of two, three, five and ten and the related division facts.  They will be representing facts as arrays and use multiplication and division facts to solve simple word problems.

English sessions will be centred around the writing structure of recounts – retelling of events.  We have begun to identify past tense verbs ending in ‘ed’ and will continue to work on irregular and regular verbs.  Children will be recognising and using specific vocabulary that will show order when writing a recount as well as continuing their individualised spelling program in class and for homework.

Homework will begin in Week 2 this term and will follow a very similar format to last term.

Finally, A big thank you for making me feel so welcome.  I have met many parents and look forward to meeting you all over the coming weeks.

2017 Catholic Performing Arts Festival Opening Mass

The 2017 Performing Arts Festival for Catholic Schools and Colleges has been officially opened. Holy Cross was represented with pride at the festival's Opening Mass by Senior School students Calvin Thiel (Year 12) and Zophia Paluszak (Year 11) and Junior School students Christian Tenaglia (Year 6) and Mia-Mae Vella (Year 5), all of whom are involved in Performing Arts Enrichment activities. The mass was held at Infant Jesus Church in Morley and presided over by Bishop Donald Sproxton and several other priests. It was a fantastic celebration of the importance of the role of faith in the Arts and those in attendance were treated to some beautiful music, dance and drama which were interwoven throughout the mass. Executive Director for Catholic Education in Western Australia, Dr Timothy McDonald then officially opened the festival for 2017.

Holy Cross College commenced participation in the festival earlier this week by presenting The Story of Oscar Romero in the Christian Drama category which was performed at the Chapel of St Brigid at Mercy College. Junior School students will be performing Piano Solos and Duets at Zenith Music next week. Updates throughout the festival will be posted weekly.

Year 12 ATAR Examinations & Events

ATAR examination timetables are now available on the SCSA website, please see the link below. These are the SCSA exams and not the internal mock exams run by the school during the coming holiday break. A mock exam timetable will be issued to students in week 5 of this term.

A Year 12 information evening will be held on Wednesday 16th of August to give students and parents information on the final Year 12 events for the year and information on applying to tertiary institutions.
