Year Six
In Religious Education, the Year Six students are learning about, how
to show love in the Year of Mercy. On 8 December, 2015, Pope
Francis declared the Year of Mercy and he opened the Holy Doors in Vatican in
Rome. Holy Doors around the world were opened so that we can experience the
love and mercy of God.
In Big Ideas, we have been learning about the history of Federation
and how government looks today. Federation is when Australia became one
country. We were also learning about the people who helped Australia become one
country, like John Quick, Edmund Barton and George Reid. Today the Government has
the House of Representatives that makes the laws and changes the laws, while
the Senate, says yes or no. We have learned that if the Senate does not like
the laws that were made by the House of Representatives, the House of Representatives
must change the laws until the Senate says ‘yes’.
In Writing, we have been learning about procedures and explanation
texts. In a procedure text there is a title, goal, materials and steps. We had
to write a procedural text about how to use something on the iPad. For example,
Carl wrote how to use Explain Everything to create a movie and Jorja wrote
about how to upload documents to Google classroom. Informational text use formal
language.
In Mathematics, we are learning about fractions. We learned how to add fractions, subtract fractions, compare fractions, change related
fractions into like fractions. We also learned the top number is called the
numerator and the bottom number is called the denominator. We also learned how
to use fractions on a number line. In Measurement, we were learning about area of a
shape and the perimeter of a shape. We were also learning about how to identify
pyramid and prisms. Pyramids have a flat bottom and a narrow pointy top, while prisms have sides that are all flat.
In Music, we have been learning harmony and how to use our
vocal cords. We have also learned how to use our body as an instrument and how
to play different instruments like guitar, bass, piano and drums.
