The upper reaches of the Swan River
were calm in the warmth of a typical still summer evening in Caversham. The
chatter of the cicada’s and other river insects blended with the intermittent
calls from the river egrets and shelducks. The setting sun sparkled on the
treetops while the light of day slowly faded below the canopy of the eucalypts
giving way to the velvety tones of the night sky.
Through a limestone tunnel the
tranquillity of the Caversham House gardens was shattered with the excited sounds
of the 2016 Senior Ball guests as the elegant young ladies skilfully tiptoed
across the grass in their stilettoes, trying to avoid the inevitable descent
into the soft river loam below. The accompanying young men glided across the
lawn looking sophisticated in their black and white tuxedos. A throng of
parents and other family members followed like a gaggle of paparazzi to capture
the once in a lifetime moments to show to generations to come.
Immediately after the parade of high
fashion and photos on the steps of the medieval like castle wall guest were
formally presented to the Principal, Vice Principal and College Captains to
enjoy mocktails before making their way to the stylishly decorated tables.
College Captains, Lauren Ford and
Max Hughes, officially welcomed guests with Stacie Braganza, Faith Captain,
leading the assembled guests in Grace. The ambient music provided by the DJ
added to the urbane atmosphere of the evening while guests enjoyed a sumptuous
buffet fit for royalty.
Throughout the night the music
thumped and pounded as guests jumped, shook, shimmied and shaked to an array of
music crossing many boundaries and genres. Guest sang and chanted along with gusto
to many tunes that, to many of the more mature generation, seemed so foreign
and obscure. How wonderful it would be if these same young men and women sang
church hymns and the National Anthem with such passion and enthusiasm!
As the evening drew to a close a
number of fun and humorous awards were presented to acknowledge Mr and Ms
Congeniality, best dancers and many others. Mr Benton’s rapid fire, made up,
short-lived mixes of hip-hop, techno, rave, and aerobic dance routines would
surely win a place on Dancing with the Stars.
Like all fairy tales, the evening
came to an end with guests joining in the chorus of the final song. The
tranquillity of Caversham House slowly returned as guests joined their families
or hired limousines to make the journey home.
A big thank you to the Ball committee,
Mr Murphy and Ms Pastorelli for organising such a wonderful evening.
