Friends of Holy Cross Quiz Night

The Friends of Holy Cross Quiz Night was held on Friday 9 September 2016 in the new Lyon building with 140 people in attendance. The night was filled with a lot of fun and great community spirit. We thank Steve Kerr for his work as MC on the night. He did an awesome job amid a very rowdy crowd and a challenging sound system. Thank you to Paul Fanning who designed the posters and tickets and Germaine Locke-McLean who was the RSA Manager for the evening.  Special thanks to the organising committee of Michelle Francis, Sarah Dye, Tarquin Allen, Jo DiPino, and Kristy Roberts.

Overall the night was a fantastic success, raising approximately $4000.

Also, a big thank you to our families who made their classroom donations for small raffle prizes and the families with businesses who have made donations for the Quiz We are very grateful to our sponsors. Without their generous donations the night would not have been such a great success.

Feast Day 2016

For each canonised saint, the Catholic Church assigns one day of the year, known as the saint’s feast day, to honour and remember their unwavering faith and extraordinary contribution to humanity and the Church.

Holy Cross College commemorates its’ feast day close to the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which is celebrated every year on September 14, and which recalls three events: the finding of the True Cross by Saint Helena, the mother of the emperor Constantine; the dedication of churches built by Constantine on the site of the Holy Sepulchre and Mount Calvary; and the restoration of the True Cross to Jerusalem by the emperor Heraclius II after it had fallen into the hands of Chosroas, King of the Persians.

Feast Day is also a celebration of our unique school identity, founded on the Cross. We come together to share in the Eucharist and remember the sacrifice Jesus made for us, so that through him we can ‘Live Life to the Full’.

The day began with Mass held in the undercroft, where students are to be commended for their respectful and reverent participation. The augmented sound systems gave volume to the choir who sang superbly, while the liturgical dance by the Junior School added an endearing appeal to the sacredness of the Mass. Fr Bona emphasised our obligation to give thanks to God for all our gifts and blessings – we truly do live in paradise.

Following Mass, there was a hive of activity as students, teachers and parents busily set up their stalls and activities. There was ample food with sausage sizzles, cheeseburgers, nachos, party pies, fairy floss, fruit kebabs and many many more sumptuous options. Popular as always was the face painting and coloured hair spray. Sponge the teacher was unusually popular! The Mega Meltdown was a favourite with the the teachers showing off their coordination skills and stamina, ducking and diving over the rotating obstacles. Tadi Chikwama was a master auctioneer at the end of the day selling off the services of teachers to the highest bidders.

The festivities on the sunny spring day were a wonderful success with all monies raised going toward the House charities.

Thank you to everyone for making Feast Day 2016 such an enjoyable celebration. Special thank you to the House Coordinators, Teachers , Friends of Holy Cross and Support Staff for making the day truly awesome.

Friends of Holy Cross Parent Camino Salvado Walk

A chilly, but sunny day, greeted 17 parent pilgrims as they arrived at school to take the College bus to Guildford Station and then catch the train to East Perth to begin the second stage of the Holy Cross Camino Salvado.

Camino is a Spanish word meaning ‘path’ or ‘journey’. So, the Camino Salvado traces the journey of Dom Rosendo Salvado from Subiaco to New Norcia, a monastic community established in 1847 in the tradition of the Benedictine Order of monks. Salvado was captivated by the indigenous people of the Moore River area worked alongside them to build his faith community. The Camino Salvado winds its way through the city along the Swan River up into the Perth hills and Chittering Valley, making its way to the Moore River and New Norcia, a total distance of around 160km.

A pilgrim is a person on a journey to to holy place. The Camino Salvado pilgrimage concludes at the Abbey Church in New Norcia, one of the oldest Catholic places in Western Australia.

The second stage of the Holy Cross Camino Salvado from East Perth to Guildford is around 16km. After coming together to recite the “Pilgrims Prayer’ our parent pilgrims set a cracking pace along the picturesque riverside walk. A collaborative effort kept the group from straying off the path, stopping at the tranquil surrounds of Ashfield Flats for lunch before completing the final leg into Guildford for a well earned rest and cappuccino. The Pilgrims gathered near the train station to recite the ‘Gratitude Prayer’, giving thanks to God for a safe and enjoyable walk, before taking the College bus back to school. Sincere thanks to Mr Muller for driving the bus.

It was a wonderful time to get to know each other, build community spirit, reflect on the beauty of creation and, perhaps, get a little fitter.

Special thank you to Susan Sorensen, President, Friends of Holy Cross, for organising the day.
