Year 7's are ready for take off!

The Year 7 students have been working hard all term to answer their big question, 'Are you a Guardian of the Galaxy?'

They have almost completed a six step inquiry process, which has seen them investigate what would happen if the Earth stopped turning on its axis, think of alternative solutions for Humans to survive, and then be told that we are going to evacuate to Planet Zephyr. Planet Zephyr has very similar characteristics to the Moon, so students had research what should be taken with them in a resettlement kit

The past two weeks have seen them creating their Re-Settlement kits.
These kits were allowed to contain up to 10 items, and then each group member had to connect their kits so that they were ready for space travel. Students will self assess and peer review these R kits next week, and they will be available for viewing at the learning conversations.

Next term, students will be investigating the local area of Ellenbrook, but in week 1 all students are expected to participate in a Camino Salvado from Subiaco to East Perth. Permission slips were due in on Wednesday, so please ensure that these are signed and brought into school.

NEAS Finals

A massive congratulations to the Year 7 Girls Netball team and Year 8/9 Boys Soccer teams who will be in the NEAS finals this week. The boys have secured themselves a home final on Wednesday afternoon at Arbor Grove against Swan Valley, while our Netballers will play on Thursday at Swan Valley. We would love to see parents down there to cheer them on!
The Year 7 boys were unlucky to not have the chance to play their last match this week as La Salle forfeited placing them  third on the ladder along with our 8/9 Girls Netball.
Good luck for the finals.

All things starting with 'O' and 'P' in Kindergarten!

Kindergarten H

It has been a busy fortnight in Kindergarten. Last week we explored the letter Oo. We were very lucky to have Mrs Love come into the class with her ThermoMix to help us make orange sorbet. We used our strong fingers to peel the oranges and squeeze out some sticky, tasty juice. We then added some ice and sugar and turned on the machine. We had to listen very carefully to the instructions from Mrs Love and there were many different numbers we had to look for at different stages of the process. The final verdict was that the orange sorbet was OUTSTANDING!

We have been starting to learn some new sports games in preparation for our Athletics Carnival. We have been having lots of fun with our friends in Kindergarten C playing these games in our House groups.

In PAThS we have been looking at 'making friends'. We have been focussing on how it is important to try and be friends with everyone and how we can use some simple phrases to help resolve conflicts.

Kindergarten H Teacher

Kindergarten C

Kindergarten was the perfect place to be this week with so many activities to help us learn about the letter pP and the sound that it makes. This week we cooked yummy pepperoni and pineapple pizzas, pancakes and popcorn. We microwaved puffy pictures, created patterns, made potato prints, put on puppet shows, used our feet to paint penguins, threaded pasta necklaces and squished pink and purple play dough. To finish off the week we celebrated with a Pyjama Party, watched Peter Pan or Pocahontas, played games and took home balloon puppy dogs and pirate swords. We had a positively perfect week!

State Orienteering Championships

On Wednesday a group of Holy Cross Year 9 students along with 1000 other primary and secondary students, participated in the All Schools State Orienteering Championships. Most of the girls had a trying time locating all of their markers as the contours on their maps couldn't really prepare them for the steepness of the course.  Not only was this quite a hilly course but they needed to navigate Fred Jacoby reserve in chilly conditions and light rain. The course was no match for Hannah Schnell who placed second in her age group and should be offered a place to compete for Western Australia at the Nationals  later this year. Chloe Andrews and Paige Albuino also had a great pair result coming in at 23.  Overall the weather didn’t dampen the girls experience, they had a great day out and about with all recommending orienteering to any student willing to simply get outdoors.

Challenge and Intrigue in Year One and Three

Year One

Is it Week 9 already? It has been a busy fortnight in Year One!
Today we were very lucky to have a Liturgy in the Church. We celebrated that we are all special and enjoyed listening to the Gospel story of Jesus blessing the children. Father Bona showed us a huge picture, which illustrated the Gospel story.

We have enjoyed giving directions during Mathematics, as our focus has been location and transformation. We have discussed the language we use and the importance of being clear with our directions. The children have made treasure maps, hidden treasure in the classroom, given directions to find their treasure and created PuppetPal presentations using our directional language.

Nouns and verbs have been our grammar focus during our reading activities. The students have sorted different nouns and verbs and created clever alliterations with their names. Some of our fanaticstic alliterations include:
Maxim mixes music, Jaxon jumps, Karlee kicks,
Conor cooks, Ruby reads and Indyanna iceskates.

We have continued to develop calming down strategies. We have looked at the traffic light signals in PAThS.
Red = Stop [Take one long, deep breath. Say the problem and how you feel]
Yellow = Make a Plan [Think – what could I do? Think – would it work?]
Green = Go [Try your best idea. How did it work?]
Students created PicCollage posters to demonstrate what the colours mean.

During sport, we have been lucky enough to join with the Year 3’s. We have been practising our athletic games in our house groups. Go SALVADO! (and the other Houses too).

Year Three

This week in Year Three we have started a new Religious Education unit, which explores the forces in creation. We have been creating wonder questions around the wind and water. We had fun making kites to experience the wind. We discovered that even though we can’t see the wind, we can feel it, just like God and the Holy Spirit. We have also reviewed the water cycle which has no beginning and no end, just like God’s love for us.

As part of our procedural writing in English, the Year Three students are undertaking an egg challenge. They are designing a container that will protect an egg from breaking when dropped from one metre. They are exploring different materials to counteract the hard surface and momentum from the fall. Once they have completed their designs they will then write a procedure of how to make the container, before testing it out. Hopefully we don’t have too many scrambled eggs!

Salvado House Fashion Parade

During extended HTG in Week 8, Salvado House came together with our Junior School House members for a fashion parade with a difference! Each HTG were given 15 minutes and some rudimentary materials including newspaper and tape to design a costume for each Junior School member of the HTG. The costumes had to fit a particular theme and we had a wide range of creations including a lion, some Harry Potters and some lovely princesses!

Dissecting the Journey in Year 9 Big Ideas

Week 8 saw the Year 9s enter the first phase in their new project: Where is the Great City of Oz? As the project unfolds, the students will make strong connections with the essential symbols from the Wizard of Oz - Heart, Brain, Courage and Imagination. This week, one half of the Year 9 group investigated the science of heart and brain, undertaking heart and brain dissections to make sense of the importance of these organs to body systems. In the coming weeks, they will look at the role of body systems to courage (fight and flight response) and imagination.

The other half of the cohort continued their development of their photo narrative skills and began a FlipBoard of one of the 'Great Cities of Oz'. The two halves will swap and complete the alternate activities in Week 11.

Next week, the students will embark on their first journey to two of the Great Cities of Oz - Perth and Fremantle! They are reminded to bring a small object that represents heart, brain, courage or imagination to use for the photo narrative work they will complete on the day.

What's New in the ELC?

Junior School Update

The Year Three students shared some of their learning at the Junior School Assembly on Tuesday, 8 June. They showed off their singing talent as they led us in prayer and sang a song relating to their Religious Education unit of work. They have also been busy narrating stories and composing background music for their puppet shows using the app Puppet Pals 2.

The Parent Class Coordinators have been announced and were introduced at the Assembly. Families received a letter outlining the Coordinator for their child's class and seeking consent to share contact information. Please return the consent forms by Friday, 19 June.

As the Junior School welcomes the addition of Year 4, 5 and 6 students in 2016 families have been invited to attend an Information Evening on Monday, 22 June at 6:30pm in the Learning Resource Centre. Attendance is optional, although we look forward to seeing you there.

Families are reminded Learning Conversations for Semester 1 will be held over two days: Wednesday, 1 July (12:30pm-7:00pm) and Thursday, 2 July (3:00pm-5:30pm). It is important for your child to attend the Learning Conversation with you to allow them to share and celebrate their learning. Please note the students will finish at 12:05pm on Wednesday, 1 July to accommodate the Learning Conversations.

Pre-Kindergarten

The last few weeks have seen us welcome more new friends into the Pre-Kindergarten class. The children have warmly embraced their new friends and it has been wonderful to see them using their emerging social skills to try and make friends, play together, share and cooperate. A big focus for this age group is learning how to move through the different stages of play, such as from solitary to parallel play and then eventually cooperative play. I have noticed that the children are engaging in a lot more parallel play now and are starting to talk about their 'friends', which is lovely to see.

This week we commenced learning about the ocean and ocean life and the children were very excited to share all of their prior knowledge. We have already explored wet and dry sand, painted pictures of things we like about the ocean and role-played being at the beach. I can't wait to see what other interests emerge and how the children engage in play relating to this topic.

We continue to explore colours and counting to 10 as a focus for some of our mat sessions and the children have enjoyed some one-on-one time telling me all of the colours they know and counting as far as they could go. There is so much learning through play happening in Pre-Kindergarten, it's simply wonderful!

Pre-Primary

The Pre-Primary had a special visitor, Nurse Clare, in Week Eight. Nurse Clare works for the The Hospital Familiarisation Program (HFP), which is provided by Princess Margaret Hospital. The children began the session with a group discussion about their own hospital experiences and then were shown various items of medical equipment. Nurse Clare asked open-ended questions such as: “Why did you have to go to hospital?” and “Who can tell me what this instrument is used for?” The students then watched a video in which a child was admitted to hospital and taken through the usual procedures of hospitalisation such as anaesthesia and surgery.

The students loved the opportunity to dress up as Doctors and Nurses. They assisted the toy doll Kelly in her surgery, walked on crutches and were pushed around in a wheel chair. The emphasis was on learning through dramatic play, which allows children to learn at an individual pace and direction. Storybooks about hospitalisation, jigsaw puzzles, board games and hospital dolls’ houses were an integral part of this session. After the session, the students wrote a reflection on the experience and created a picture of a nurse or doctor.

In PAThS we have been learning about sharing and caring in the classroom and playground. Sharing is the act of taking turns, or giving a portion of something to others. Twiggle the Turtle teaches us that when you share you feel great inside and it makes other people feel wonderful too. The children have been learning the following sayings “Sharing is Caring” and “Sharing is a win-win situation”.

Pre-Primary Teacher

Year Two

This week in Year Two we have started an scientific investigation of the water cycle. This involved students observing the changes in the water level of two jars. One of the jars had a lid on it and the other had no lid. They observed that the water in the jar with no lid disappeared. They also observed that the jar with the lid became foggy.  After our observations the students developed some questions that will lead our next inquiry project.

In Mathematics, we are learning to apply a variety of mental strategies to one and two-digit problems. Some of the students are using the counting on strategy and others are beginning to develop an understanding of bridging ten. The students are challenging themselves to try these new strategies. It is wonderful to see.

A Journey of his Own - Mr Dave McKern

ACC Cross Country

The Associated and Catholic Colleges Cross Country Carnival saw almost 60 students compete for the College, with over 2000 students from the 62 other schools in the ACC competing in the competition. Following on from the WA All Schools Cross Country, there were some fantastic individual results. However, the school was able to qualify for the Overall Schools trophy by having three finishers in every race. The College finished 30th overall out of 62 schools, an achievement the students should be proud of for such a small and growing school.

The individual highlights for the ACC Cross Country was a stellar performance from Cian Guest. Cian had recently finished fourth in the WA All Schools but he went even better in the ACC with a massive sprint from over 200m from the finish to take out victory. In Cian’s three years of running at the ACC he has run 1st (2013), 2nd (2014) and 1st (2015). This is an achievement that some very accomplished runners through the years have not been able to replicate.

Other really strong performances included, Yugusuk Soka (Under 16 – 18th place), Luwaya David (Under 13 – 53rd), Alex Rankin (Under 14 – 78th), Caitlin McKenzie (Under 16 – 80th) and Jake Caulfield (Under 13 – 95th)

Times and placings can be checked by parents and students at the ACC's website.

A busy fortnight in the ELC

Pre-Kindergarten

It was so pleasing to hear that the children did such an amazing job in my absence. Mrs Gorton was extremely impressed with how well the children adapted to having different teachers and how well they followed the routines of Pre-Kindergarten. This just goes to show how well the children have settled and how responsible and confident they are becoming.

The last few weeks have seen the children exploring Zoo life in many different ways. They have created masks and puppets of their favourite zoo life, painted zoo animals at the easels and used the technique of wax resist to create a zoo scene. One of their favourite learning experiences was creating their own zoo using a container filled with sand, some popsticks, greenery from my garden and zoo animal figurines. It was wonderful to see the children working in small groups to create their zoo and the language that emerged as they discussed what they were doing.

Our focus in the weeks ahead will be on exploring living things from the ocean. If you have anything your child might like to share with the class for our ocean exploration, such as photos, a stuffed toy, shells, etc., please feel free to bring this in.

Kindergarten H

In Kindergarten H we have enjoyed exploring our outdoor environments (when it hasn¹t been raining!) This week, we ventured down to the bush area near the College oval to investigate the different things that God created. We enjoyed running down the slope, jumping over rocks, looking at birds, collecting branches and crawling under bushes. We then gathered a giant collection of leaves to bring back to our classroom. We shared what we had found and made some comparisons between the similarities and differences. Some leaves were huge and wide, while others were short and pointy. We have used these leaves to create some beautiful collage pieces.

In PAThS we have been focussing on giving compliments. We have been trying to focus on offering compliments about the qualities we like in our friends, as opposed to just complimenting them about their physical traits.

Mrs Tucker
Kindergarten H Class Teacher

Kindergarten C

Kindergarten C has been marvelous, magical and magnificent this week as we have learnt all about the letter mM. We made mini mango muffins and milkshakes, painted with marshmallows, decorated monsters and played with magnets.

During PAThS we have been talking about using our manners and giving compliments.
As the weather has been so lovely, we have enjoyed our extra time playing in our amazing playground with our Kindergarten friends.
We love learning through play!

Mrs Borg
Kindergarten C Class Teacher

Pre-Primary

In Mathematics, the students have been improving in leaps and bounds. They have begun recognising the value of tens and ones in numbers 10-20, reading our class Flower clock and have continued matching the quantity to a value.

In PAThS, we have been continuing to share compliments to the 'Kid of the Day' and throughout our general work and play. We have been looking at the comfortable emotion: grateful, which is a feeling that expresses appreciation.

Year One

Term 2 - Week 7
It’s been a short and sweet fortnight at Holy Cross College!

News was underway with a lot of excited children. We got to experience a huge variety of presentations due to the free choice week. Eve showed us her very bright and sparkly dancing outfit and Ryan wowed us with his fancy hat. We enjoyed watching Aislinn’s adventures horse riding with Brian and Sebastian’s beautiful collage of his brother Leo. We are looking forward to hearing about our parents or grandparents school and home life next week during news.

Addition has been our main focus in Mathematics this fortnight! We have been discovering strategies such as counting on and rearranging parts to add numbers. The students are developing a book to illustrate their learning and to share their strategies with their peers.

We have been appreciating all that Jesus made in Religious Education this fortnight. We looked at things Jesus would have built as a carpenter. The students have also learnt the ‘Glory be to the Father’ prayer and discussed it’s meaning. We now appreciate that when we say the prayer we are thanking the Father, Son and Holy Spirit for all we have in our lives.

Ms Behiels
Year One Class Teacher

Year Two

The Year Two students hosted the Junior School Liturgy in the church on Wednesday, 4 June. The students read and sang beautifully. The Liturgy is the final piece of our unit on Confirmation and learning about the Holy Spirit. Our next unit is based upon the Eucharist and Jesus’ gift to us.

We have completed our stories about an adventure on a new boat. The students have written some fantastic and interesting stories. They have really used their imaginations! Please feel free to come into the classroom and read our stories that are displayed on the wall. The app Snap Collage was used to show a sample of the students' writing.

Our Science topic this term is water and we are conducting an experiment to answer the question, "where does water go?". The students are learning about fair tests and how to write up a scientific investigation. We are discussing the term variables and the effect they have on the outcome of an experiment.

Mrs Ryan
Year Two Class Teacher

Year Three

In Year Three, we have taken a leap back in time looking at how schools have changed over the last one hundred years. This term in Big Ideas, we have been exploring the question: School: how does Holy Cross compare? The children have had the opportunity to write with ink dip pens, play hopscotch and marbles. We have also been looking at class rules from the 19th Century as well as photos of the clothing worn and equipment used. We were amazed to learn that teachers used the cane as a form of punishment and children had to have their teeth and nails checked before entering the classroom. We are looking forward to learning more about how schools have changed and making predictions about what school may look like in another one hundred years!

Following the Yellow Brick Road in Year 9 Big Ideas

On Thursday, 4 June, the Year 9s launched into their new project for Autumn and Winter Term with the big question 'Where is the Great City of Oz?'. The day saw Big Ideas teachers assume the characters from the Wizard of Oz - Dorothy, the lion, Tin Man and Scarecrow. The Da Vinci space was turned into our own Ellenbrook version of Kansas through the display of a photo narrative created by Mr Gooch and as their first task, students were challenged to produce a photograph of the school to fit into the black and white, bleak theme of the narrative.

The students also launched into the iTunes U course that will guide them through the journey of their project and also engaged in a competition to be first to complete a Dorothy (imagination), Tin Man (heart), scarecrow (brain) and lion (courage) challenge. An iTunes U voucher is over the rainbow for the first student to complete all the challenges and collect all four tokens this week!

Devices in the Senior School

Just a note to remind students and parents that iPads are our primary learning device and as such, students need to be bringing their iPads to school every day.

Senior School students only, can choose to bring a personal laptop to school, alongside their iPad, but there is absolutely no expectation for parents to be purchasing laptops for their children in Senior School.

As stated, the iPad is our primary learning tool.

Year 8 Outdoor Education Excursion

Last Tuesday the Year 8 Outdoor Education class travelled to Riverside Gardens to trial their fishing skills. We left after HTG and headed down to the river with our hopes of catching some Bream set high.

Each individual first had to assemble their rods and set up their rigs with knots they had been practicing at school. They then had their lines tested by Mr Buckley and Mrs de Courcier, before they could even go near the bait. Many did not pass the test and this saw these students heading back to their tackle boxes to try their luck for the second, third and some for a fourth time.

Students whose rigs passed were then sent to practice their casting and were able to get signed off on their casting ability, which allowed them to progress to the bait. Our river prawns served as tasty treats as many students found out when their lines came back empty, or as some realised they had not fastened their bait on very well and it ended up being catapulted ahead of their hook into the Swan.

It was great fun for those who could avoid a tangle, each other’s lines or a snare from below, with two students lucky enough to hook a fish. Unfortunately they were both undersized and were released back into the river to fight another day.
