LifeLink Sleep Out

Every year, more than 31 000 Western Australians are helped by a LifeLink supported agency which collectively deliver $47 million in welfare services throughout WA!

Our Holy Cross College sleep out was once again a resounding success. Students arrived on Thursday 15 August at 6pm and the evening began. This year we were prepared for rain and whilst not being flooded, we definitely had to run for cover at several points during the evening.

Year 11 and Mrs Brown getting ready to serve their soup
The Year 11’s did a fantastic job running the soup kitchen and there were many favourable comments from both staff and students about the quality of the evening meal.

Showing talent to fund a box!
This year students had to busk for their box! This saw some great talent emerging.
Again, some very interesting structures emerged when it was time to build and prepare shelters. We certainly have some talented architects and builders in the making.

One of the things that I love about the Sleep Out, is the way our students throw themselves into the challenge of raising funds for those in need and the way that they reflect on the reasons for this. This year was no exception.
Busking for a box

Some of the reflections we heard around candle light in the grounds of our under cover area were thought provoking and once again showed me the real ‘spirit of Holy Cross’.   I would like to thank the students and staff of Holy Cross for their amazing support of such a great cause.

Next week, we will we welcome the Arch Bishop to Holy Cross to present us with the Life Link Spirit Award for last years effort at the sleep out. We hope to be able to show the Arch Bishop some of our diary room footage this year also as the spirit of our College continues to grow.

This year we have raised over $5000. Well done Holy Cross. You are really making a difference.

Year 11 Christian Service Learning - Soup Kitchen for Life Link Sleep Out

Minestrone
Chicken Noodle
Potato and Leek
Tomato Soup

On August 15, our Year 11 students transformed themselves into fabulous soup makers in preparation for the annual College Sleep Out for Life Link.

They prepared and served the soup, as hours for Christian Service Learning. They did a fantastic job and their efforts were very much appreciated by the students who were cold and hungry that evening.

Many of the students who prepared the soup, then also slept out for the night, further contributing to the experience.

Well done Year 11. We look forward to seeing what you produce next year.

Senior School Preparation for Exams

At the end of Winter Term, Senior School students will begin exams. What becomes most important for our students is that they do not leave it until the end of the term to begin revising. We are doing some significant work in preparing for exams during LAGS and students need to be beginning to prepare study timetables at this point. Below are some interesting points to note in terms of the purpose of revision, some techniques and 7 key tips to make it really effective.

The purpose of revision

Revision means going over work in order to:

1. Check your understanding.
2. Make links between different topics to see how the whole subject fits together.
3. Remind yourself of material you have forgotten.
4. Reinforce your learning.
5. Identify and fill gaps in your knowledge.

Revision techniques
There are countless ways of revising. The least effective ways are those that involve just reading through notes over and over. The most effective ways are those where you interact with the material, making it meaningful to yourself, for example:
1. Using your material to answer a question or address a problem you have not previously tackled.
2. Reworking the material into a chart or diagram.
3. Summarising material under headings onto cards.
4. Discussing the material with other people.

7 Key Tips

1. Start early.
2. Make a revision timetable. Avoid wasting time re-writing this over and over again.
3. Answer questions from past papers.
4. Identify the key points, examples and evidence for each topic- you will not be able to write very much on each in the exam.
5. Prepare for questions that combine two different topics.
6. Prepare for unusual questions or angles for your ‘best’ topics.
7. Go over the same material quite quickly several times rather than spending a long time on one occasion.

Year 9 Big Ideas

Winter term is upon us and once again Year 9 find themselves preparing for their city experience. This year, the big question is;

A City of Change - Is Perth Ready for the Future?

Year 9 began an exploration of this today by creating a 3D model of our city. Using their Ipads, they took aerial photographs of the city they created and then answered a series of questions posed by their teachers.

A highlight was the use of an aerial camera that was able to hover over the map and record image from a height.

They looked at past and present images of Perth and used their iPads to comment on what differences and similarities they could see between 1905 Perth and 2013 Perth City.

How has Perth changed?
